THE RED HACKLE
It’s historically fact that the first “Official” use of the Red Hackle occurred when the 42nd Black Watch Regiment, at Royston Herttfordshire was issued Red Vulture feathers on June 4th 1795″. ~ Colonel Hon. David Arbuthnott
There is no short answer to the question “How did the Black Watch get the Red Hackle?” Perhaps the custom started with the Fraser Highlanders 78th of Foot in 1757, during their service in the French and Indian Wars. However it came to be, this unique emblem has been worn continuously in every form of headdress except the glengarry for over 200 years. Today’s Highlanders continue to wear it with pride.
In October 1938, the Transvaal Scottish were given the privilege of wearing the Red Hackle on their khaki tam o’shanters. This is the emblem of The Royal Regiment, The Black Watch. The Regimental badge depicts a Scottish thistle on a scroll bearing the motto Alba nam Buadh (“Well done Scotland, Scotland home of the virtuous”). It is surrounded by a heraldic strap and buckle bearing the regiment’s name, all on the Star of the Order of the Thistle.
This range of specially labelled wines has been created by the Transvaal Scottish Regimental Association in celebration of what would have been the 120th Birthday of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment.
